Building A Budget Board, With Room To Upgrade

Okay @Superflim and @AlanZhou You two have been absolutely amazing. Here’s were I am at

Deck: Old Longboard, 1080 mm long, trucks are 230 mm, prob wont fit

Trucks:

Pulley / Mount:

Motor:Dual 5065 200kv from a lovely forum goer. Thankyou

Wheels: What do you think would be a good size to fit? I am about 205 pounds and 6’5 so theres a lot of resistance there

Xt90 anti spark: https://www.amazon.com/XT90-S-Connector-housing-Li-poly-Battery/dp/B06XW63S87/?pldnSite=1

VESC - Need 2, ill try to buy used ones from this forum

Receiver?

Controller - Any reasonably priced recommendations

Batteries: Open to suggestions, I have a spot welder so I need batteries, nickel, as well as the wrappings? Fishtape / kapton tape to be insulated and put together? And on top of that, there’s a ton of topics in this sub about this, what would you recommend as an in depth guide to a first time spot welding DIY battery job?

your gonna need 2 pulley/ mount kits, and 2 vesc

also for controller get a mini remote.

Think dual motors would be good for this build? getting them for about $60 which seems good. And thankyou

From what i have read, 25R is a good standard? And I would get about 20 of them

25R batteries?

I’d steer clear personally. 30Q have more capacity and can output 20A just fine, like the 25Rs, but 25Rs sag a lot. Under 20A load per cell, my 10S4P pack sags like 8-9v on average.

My next build I’m going with VTC5a, similar capacity to 25R, and they are rated for 35A or 25A depending on who’s testing them, and at 20A per cell the sag is super minimal. And they are super cheap on nkon right now.

But, 30Q is pretty much the standard, I’d recommend those over 25R for sure.

Okay thank you, I will use those. 20 for a 10s battery right?

Yep, 10S2P. And 70 battery amps with those cells is super respectable for 2P… Just don’t expect a crap ton of range with a 2P config.

If you go 30Q, that would be 40 battery amps for 10S2P, but you will get better range. If you want range over torque, go 30Q… If you want torque over range, VTC5A. There’s also these, better than VTC5A even, and they were on sale for $1.99 a piece!

is 2p my only option? I have read about series / parrelel a million times and still struggling to understand it. What kind of range would it be

You can for sure go more than 2P. I’d suggest you do so. I’d go for 10S4P at least…

I’ll do some calcs one sec.

10S2P 30Q - 4.5mi

10S2P VTC5a - 3.9mi

Double those range numbers for 4P. You can see torque ratings in there, I’d mess around with it for a bit till you settle on what you think you want out of this build. Those numbers are fairly conservative too, probably closer to charging up hills, stopping constantly and accelerating a lot under full power. You can hypermile and double your range easy, but on low power settings, crawling around, etc.

And if you are still confused about series vs parallel, this article is pretty good.

Hypermile? whats that mean? I want a fair middle ground. Not too many crazy hills, so only enough torque to get my fattass moving.

Hypermile, basically ride really easy, tuck in an aerodynamic stance, try to Regen as much power when it makes sense, limit max power output… Just trying all the things to get the absolute maximum range out of your battery as possible.

Got it, thank you that makes sense. I can’t see myself going more then 25mph so saving some range would be great.

I think ill rock

Like you reccomended, and do a 4p build.

Those numbers seem a little short for that I would say mabye 7-10 miles is more what it should be.

keep in mind Wh/km on that calculator is per a motor.

so if I have dual 5065’s and a 10s4p, what would you think my torque / speed / range would be? The calculator doesnt seem to have a setting for dual motors. And does two motors compensate for the fact that the motors are smaller 5065’s? Sorry for my bad understanding, complex topic.

Where? Im in eugene Oregon

Meto! Portland.

Is there a ride scene here?
