ESC beginner questions?

Hi, I am new to the esk8 community and plan on building a budget DIY board. I have some simple questions about the ESC. Do all I have to do is plug in the battery and motors? Or do I need to calibrate it with things such as wheel diameter and battery voltage, etc?

Yes you have to plug in the battery ( or voltage supplies) and motor. You do not need to add the wheels though.
