I would start on a very low powered longboard and then move up to short boards.

A regular cruiser type board like a longboard / penny nickel (this is what i started with) would probably do to get a feel for it. Then move onto a electric longboard, probably a cheaper one with hub motors since they are often beginner friendly.

A Nash with Destructo trucks probably be your best bet
I think the ADRIMAX type can also be an option for beginners
Scooters can also do tricks in skate parks. But, the skateboard can perform advanced tricks in the skatepark and you can cruise downhill at increased speed. Also, maintaining a balance while rolling is exciting and challenging too.
