What do i need a BMS for?

I’m building my e sk8board and i do have some troubles. and i think about buying a BMS but i don’t know, what a BMS is for, why a BMS can be bad or where to buy good ones?

essentially they make all the different battery packs “look” like one big battery, keeps everything nice and balanced for easy charging and easy/safe discharging when you’re motoring around
